Black Sand of Fontainebleau

10 works2024 – 2024

Black Sand of Fontainebleau brings together ten untitled works made in 2024. Their numbering, from Untitled #1 to Untitled #10, invites them to be read as variations within a single investigation rather than as separate images. Formats and techniques are not recorded in the catalogue, so the series is introduced above all through its surfaces, contrasts and the movement of colour.

The photographs show compositions where mineral, earthy areas meet more vivid passages of blue, red or yellow. In Untitled #5, material gathers in layers and fragments; Untitled #6 and Untitled #8 reveal other distributions of light and dark. The group proceeds through experiments with density, flowing marks and overpainting, without settling on one dominant image. The absence of descriptive titles leaves the works open: they favour the sensation of surface, the movement of the viewer’s eye and the distance between compact and dispersed forms. The series is therefore a 2024 laboratory, attentive to visible accidents and to the way a related family of tones can produce different balances.
